Kim Jae-Hee

Abstract
This study examines the effect of informal social relationships on depression comparison by age groups (64-74 and 75+ years) in the elderly living in Jeju. The study analyzes 430 elderly cases (200 aged 65-74 years and 230 aged 75+ years) of the Korean elderly survey 2017. The dependent variable informal social relationships divided into children's relationships and friends' relationships. The main results are as follows: First, the age 75+ years group shows a higher level of depression than the 65-74. The children's relationships indicate a higher level in the 75+ age group than the 65-74. However, friends' relationships show a higher level in the age 65-74 years group than the 75+. Second, in the age group 65-74 years, lower relationship satisfaction with children, fewer friends, fewer contacts with friends, and lower relationship satisfaction with friends are related to increased depression. Third, in the age group 75+ years, the variable of many meetings with children, lower relationship satisfaction with children, and fewer friends influence high depression. Base on the results, the study implies the importance of informal social relationships to prevent elderly depression. Also, it suggests the relief ways of depression in the elderly by each age group.
